$100 scholarship

Melissa Luedtke, Director of TRIO Student Support Services at Marian University of Wisconsin shared an excerpt from their selected student's application for another scholarship:

"I’m in my third year pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Expressive and Therapeutic Arts at Marian University of Fond du Lac, WI. Despite challenges with my mental health and grief in my time in school, I currently have a 3.6 cumulative GPA and have been on the Dean’s List 4 times out of the 5 semesters completed. My sophomore year, I worked as a Peer Leader, becoming a resource for incoming freshmen in the TRIO program. Not only that, but I have maintained an on-campus job at our Registrar’s Office since my freshman year. I’m confident that I will continue to do great things in my remaining semesters.

Throughout my time in college, I’ve always said that without TRIO, I would’ve dropped out long ago. Coming to Marian was a huge transition from my life pre-college. As an incoming freshman, I was homesick constantly and afraid of socialization. At the time, I had goals of being an elementary school teacher, but still managed to feel completely lost in my new setting. The Pre-Orientation Program that TRIO offered was the first opportunity that I got to get out into the world. It forced me out of my dorm room. I met several people in the same position as I was, many of whom are still close friends today. I became close with my advisors and learned about what the program offered. That was only the beginning of the help that was to be provided for me while seeking my diploma.

Despite the many academic resources that I’ve had the privilege of using over time, most notably, the lending library for textbooks, workshops run by my advisors, and unlimited craft supplies for my art major and internships, the most important thing that I gained from the TRIO program were the personal connections. My relationships with my advisors mean the absolute world to me. For somebody who craves a family dynamic away from home and needs plenty of guidance, the fact that I can depend on them for so much makes all the difference for me while navigating my college career."

In the Upward Bound TRIO program, he serves as a resource for all his peers by sharing his personal experiences with his fellow program participants. He has been heavily involved in our TRIO Summer College Exposure program, where he has been taking classes on GA Tech’s campus to assist in the realization of attending and being a successful college student."

They’ve had to overcome adversity, yet have continued to do well academically and in their responsibilities.

As a result, she informed me that she will only be applying to 1 of the 2 programs that are a good fit for her. We are not allowed to use McNair grant funds on graduate applications, thus, this scholarship will allow her to apply to both programs.
